What can I expect at Stavanger Maritime Museum?

Stavanger Maritime Museum is housed in a unique complex of historic waterfront warehouses and a former merchant's residence. The museum tells the story of Stavanger as a maritime city in the very buildings where that history unfolded. Inside, you'll find a range of fascinating exhibitions to explore. Discover 500 years of Stavanger's harbour history, step inside an authentic merchant's apartment, a historic shipping office and a sail loft, and see remarkable archaeological finds recovered from the seabed.

Is Stavanger Maritime Museum suitable for young children?  

Yes! There is plenty for children to explore at Stavanger Maritime Museum. The highlight for many families is the interactive exhibition Sjauing på kaien (Working at the Docks), where children can dress up and take on different roles – captain of a boat, dock worker, market trader or shop assistant in the traditional general store. Children up to and including primary school age must be accompanied by an adult throughout their visit. 

How much does admission cost, and where can I buy tickets?

Adults: 170 kr. Children and young people under 18, students and military conscripts receive free admission. Your ticket includes entry to all MUST-museums that are open on the same day. An annual pass costs NOK 700. You can view all ticket prices and purchase tickets online via the ticket page or at the museum reception.

What are the opening hours? 

During the summer season, Stavanger Maritime Museum is open Monday - Sunday, 10.00-16.00. During the rest of the year, the museum is open Tuesday - Sunday, 11.00-16.00. Please check our website for the latest opening hours before your visit. 

How much time should I allow for my visit?

Stavanger Maritime Museum features both permanent and temporary exhibitions. Most visitors spend around 1½ to 2 hours exploring the museum, although families with children often stay longer. See our current exhibitions for a full overview of what's on display.

Is the museum accessible? 

We are continually working to make Stavanger Maritime Museum as accessible as possible. However, as the museum is located in historic listed buildings, full step-free access is unfortunately not possible. The ground floor is fully accessible to wheelchair users, while the upper parts of the museum are only partially accessible. There is one accessible toilet, and paid parking is available on Strandkaien, just outside the museum. Unfortunately, we are currently unable to provide dedicated facilities for visitors with visual or hearing impairments.

Is there a café and museum shop?  

Yes. Stavanger Maritime Museum has both a café and a museum shop located beside the reception. During the summer season, you can also visit Stranden Colonial, located behind the museum with an entrance from Nedre Strandgate. Step back in time to Stavanger around 100 years ago, browse traditional colonial goods, buy old-fashioned sweets, and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee with a slice of cake in the charming little tea room.

Can I go on board the museums vessels Anna af Sand and Wyvern?

Yes, the vessels can be visited by prior arrangement or during selected events, such as when they are moored in Vågen harbour. Both vessels are operated by volunteer crews.
