Stranden Colonial

Stranden Colonial is Stavanger Maritime Museum’s newest visitor experience – a shop, café, and immersive historical setting. Here you can browse fascinating colonial goods, buy old-fashioned sweets, and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee in the little tea room. At the same time, you’ll get a vivid and authentic impression of city life, trade, and café culture as it might have been in Stavanger at the beginning of the 20th century.

Today, Nedre Strandgate is considered a quiet backstreet, but over a century ago it was one of Stavanger’s busiest shopping streets, lined with trading houses that combined shops, offices, and apartments.

The building housing the Stavanger Maritime Museum was once one of these trading houses. While the museum’s main entrance faces the harbour, we have now opened the back of the building with Stranden Colonial.

Come in and take a seat with a cup of tea and something sweet, while you soak up the atmosphere and the history embedded in the walls.

Stranden Colonial is open every day during museum opening hours, Monday to Sunday, 10:00–16:00.
